FATHER’S DAY 2010
Here in the desert we are still waiting for HEAT. This is the coolest spring we have had in years. I am still not running the air conditioning at night. Evenings are nice and cool in the high 50’s and low 60’s. Daytime is beginning to warm up into the low 90’s. I believe we are expecting to hit triple digits this week end but then there is another cool trend due early next week. We’ll be longing for these temperatures in another month when we will have every day in triple digits and the nights in the 90’s!
In the meantime the palmeros are finishing up the thinning of the date strands. Each strand generally has about 25 dates per strand but are thinned down to about 8-10. This ensures good size fruit for harvest. In addition to thinning, the date bunches will be tied to a date palm arm above the date bunch. As the fruit becomes heavier the arm sometimes cannot bear the weight. The added tie-up helps sustain the weight so the arms that bear the date bunches will not break.
As May comes to a close we will be looking forward to celebrating Memorial Day and then Father’s Day in June.
